About Sally – a Reason to Consider Adoption

When we decided to look for a dog, my husband and I were hesitant about starting all over with a puppy, so we chose – somewhat selfishly – the adoption route.  We visited the area shelters (heartbreaking, since we wanted to take them all home!), and we searched the Internet.  My husband found a Golden Retriever Rescue web site and we submitted our application. Through our correspondence we found a 1-year-old Golden-Lab mix – Sally – who was living at the Granite City A.P.A.

It is a no-kill shelter, which means Sally would have had a home for life.  We are forever grateful for that since we would never have found Sally in time if she had been taken to a regular shelter.  In spite of the good care she received at the A.P.A., you can see from the photos that animals thrive when they have a family to love and take care of, and that’s exactly what happened when we took Sally home.

Sally bonded to us immediately, and every day the look in her eyes seems to say THANK YOU for loving me.  And she has been such a good sport too, trying and learning everything we introduced to her:  swimming in the lake, invisible fence training, obedience school, baths, and even tooth brushing.  But the BEST thing – her favorite thing in the world – is getting to play ball with her “dad” every night.  She gets so excited we’re sure one day she is going to come right out and say, “Come on dad, let’s play ball!!!”  And by the way, her dad enjoys it too.

You see, it was a 2-way street.  I believe that by adopting Sally, not only her life was enriched, but our lives were enriched as well – which is why I was inspired to write Sally Finds A Home.

It is my hope that Sally Finds A Home will encourage everyone to consider adoption when choosing a pet.
